Art Gallery.
We’re the first gallery in New York City to specialize in art by emerging women.
Founded by a woman artist in 2018, we represent a dozen breakthrough artists from around the world. To the best of our knowledge we are the first to only represent women.
We don’t believe the gender gap is being bridged as quickly as people think in the art world. It is estimated that 14% of art in museums and galleries in the U.S. is currently by women (source: arnet). Until that figure changes, we are committed to advancing women.
We have a unique taste and collector philosophy that sets us apart from other galleries. We seek art that is aesthetically beautiful and noticeably transforms the space that it’s in. We hate “artsy art” with no sense of place. We curate for art that you want to live with, that makes the eye smile. Its language is color, sunshine, and optimism.
We call it “Arte Feliz”, happy art. Because it looks good and feels good.
Our exceptional artist roster is majority-minority, diverse in style, medium, and background. We invest in artists’ careers and every artwork is an original one-of-a-kind piece or a limited edition only available at Surfergirl.
Surfergirl… who?
Surfergirl Gallery is the love project of strategist and artist Marcia Lorente Howell, a Spanish-American modern impressionist. Her “Walking Elvis” series has been lauded by New York magazine Pulitzer Prize art critic Jerry Saltz for “its great touch and light”.
“As the granddaughter of two women artists, I’m doing this for every girl who wants to make a living in the arts”.
When artists thrive and profit, we all profit.
We are artists so we can’t be paying rent or charging more than a 20% commission. Instead, we curate pop-up shows that sell out. We are not an artist collective and will never charge an artist for our work. Our gallery thrives on the support of collectors, art patrons, and brands. They know they get stellar work while helping diversify the arts.
